Bright, Shiny DistractionsMode

Bright, Shiny DistractionsModern leaders of companies and agencies are tempted by a host of distractions. They are told that the company must have a “mission” from which all other decisions must flow. They are liable to begin their strategy work with an attempt to explicate their goals in the belief that a strategy can be deduced from goals. They may confuse, as have many influential leaders and speakers, strategy with management. The two are related, but different. We can sympathize with their being distracted by the ninety-day chase after quarterly earnings, both guidance and results, but we should not let them think that strategy is chasing short-term results.
